In the moment I appreciated them being candid and honest. It was just feedback, right? But singling out the perfect brows, black hair and red lips, gesturing at models that looked like me, while using words like “back where you’re from”—that hit hard. It felt like a rejection of my entire culture.
It’s the same words hurled at me time and again when I was a child, getting told that I would always be a second class citizen, that I was stupid because of where I was born. Except this time, it was like being told that my culture was wrong in what we’ve found beautiful since ancient times, because a non-Chinese person said so. It was painful.
Self-Portrait, 2019.
